Blog: 10 Years of Ultrapom: Year 8

2018 was a year of figuring out what the new, bigger Ultrapom was going to be.  We also hired Randy and Cindy from Accent Rentals to help us run this bigger company, but it also meant essentially adding another company’s processes into the mix.

As part of the sale, we acquired tents.  We had no idea how to do tents. But the employees that came over from Celebrations did, and so did Randy.  I did not like tents, so we decided to just give tents a year and see if they were worth the trouble – 2018 was that year.

We learned that they were not worth the trouble, and we don’t do tents anymore.  During our year of tents, my dislike of tents turned to hatred. They took up a lot of warehouse space, required extra insurance, were difficult to put up, and every time there was a storm in the forecast when we had a tent up, I spent the entire time worrying about that tent and wondering if I was going to have to come up with a team of people to re-set that tent in a quarter of the time it took to originally install it.

It’s been over 2 years since we offered tents, and I have not regretted removing them from our inventory AT ALL.

Kansas City just doesn’t have the climate for tents.  There are maybe 3 weekends a year that are the perfect weather to have a tent wedding, and you don’t know when those weekends are going to be.  Otherwise, it’s either too hot, too cold, or too wet. And if it’s important to you that your event runs as planned without a lot of flexibility, an event under a tent is not for you.
